Round 11 took us to the Sepang International Circuit outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a long-time fixture on the F1 calendar until this year (this makes us sad). The track is characterized by fast, long sweepers between and complex corners where the line doesn’t always map against the track’s shape quite like one would expect. It’s a track I love to drive, but have yet to figure out, let alone master.
Tire wear is massive, which seems to be made worse by down-force on these Indy Lights cars, so elected to run low down-force in an effort to keep the tires alive. This only partially worked.
Qualifying for Race 1 went as expected and saw me start in P11, but with a couple of drivers making prep errors, I was already up to P9 by the time we saw the green. From there the first lap saw some nice battling with Lanark, before settling into what was a generally lonely race.
The 8th place finish in Race 1 meant I started on pole for Race 2, with massive pressure from behind from the fast guys. I felt really good about this race as I managed to hold on to 5th and not fall as far behind P4 as I would have expected.
Overall, it was a good night, with generally clean and respectful racing by all.
