Day 36 Report

We covered over 800 km, got one timezone closer to Ottawa EDT, and were blown away by Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Pictures to come.

Overall though, today was a sad day…

We’re now in Junction, TX. Junction is only a couple hundred miles from the Midland area where another senseless mass shooting took place. This one follows on the August 3 spree in El Paso (we slept there last night) in which over twenty lost their lives. Let me just say that it’s hard to reconcile the people we’ve met on this trip with the notional American who believes this kind of loss of life is the reasonable price to pay for the right to maintain their current level of access to firearms. I guess all we can do is send hopes and prayers that reason will someday prevail.

Today is also sad because Anthoine Hubert lost his life while competing in an F2 race at Spa-Francorchamps. Modern race cars are astoundingly adept at protecting their pilots, but the danger is still very much there.

Tomorrow we’ll be in Austin.
